Hope.

Well hello there,

via GIPHY

This is going to be my last post about my Genius Hour! I have enjoyed my time re-learning French and learning basic literacy skills for Spanish.

This is me trying hard with French:

This is me tackling Spanish:

So after six weeks this is what I have completed in all three apps:

Duolingo:
-Basic 1, level 2
-Basic 2, level 2
-Phrases, level 1
-Plurals 1, level 1
-Gallicism, level 1
-Basics 3, level 2
-Food, level 1
-Animals, level 1
-Weather, level 0
-Adject 1, level 0
-Plurals 2, level 0
-Clothing, level 0

Babbel:
-Beginner's Course 1, Salut! Part 1
-Beginner's Course 2, C'esr une jolie photo. Part 1
-Beginner's Course 3, C'est à qui? Part 1
-Beginner's Course 4, Voyage, voyage... Part 1
-Beginner's Course 5, Bonnes vacances! Part 1
-Beginner's Course 6, Quel beau potager! Part 1
-Refresher Course 1, Eating habits
-Refresher Course 2, A hotel reservation

Memrise:
French 1
   -Launchpad!
   -I Come in Peace
   -Being Human
   -Fuel Your Vocab: Food
   -What Do You Like?
   -Where In The Universe?
   -Fuel Your Vocab: 10, 9, 8...

For Spanish the following courses have been finished:

Duolingo:
-Intro, level 1
-Phrases, level 1
-Travel, level 1
-Restaurant, level 1
-Family, level 1
-Shopping, level 1

Babbel
-Beginner's Course 1, Mucho gusto! Part 1.
-Beginner's Course 2, Estamos casados. Part 1
-Beginner's Course 3, Que necesitamos? Part 1
-Beginner's Course 4, A donte fuiste? Part 1
Memrise:
Spanish 1
  -Launchpad
  -I Come in Peace
   -Being Human
   -Fuel Your Vocab: Food
   -What Do You Like?
   -Where In The Universe?
   -Fuel Your Vocab: 10, 9, 8...
I spent many hours into these apps! The popular vote would be DuoLingo; it is the app that is well known and honestly it does the job. Honestly if Babbel provided more to the free users I would pick it over DuoLingo! For that reason I am ordering the apps as the following:

1. DuoLingo
2. Memrise
3. Babbel

Babbel left way too much behind a paywall! If I'm paying to see what it has to offer, I would rather pay for other apps such as Rosetta Stone. Memrise was too confusing to understand at first, which is why it came second! It is a good app and does repetition better than DuoLingo. DuoLingo's simple interface and content it provides to free users is the best around, and that is why is is number one in my opinion.

As mentioned in the videos, the apps were extremely helpful but failed to help with understanding the rules around the languages! I would recommend these apps to anyone that wants to learn a language! i would also recommend that people find other resources to learn a language.

I hope you have all enjoyed my journey!

Patience you must have young padawan

This week I have been extremely busy and had very little time to make progress with my Genius Hour project. I apologize for my lack of progress, but as Senor Chang once said "I'll allow it."

The only progress I have made was with DuoLingo for French only. The course that I have completed are the following:

Weather 1- level 0
Adject 1- level 0
Basic 1- Level 1
Basic 2- level 1

Honestly, what I have learned about myself throughout my Genius Hour is that I still need to improve my time management skills. However, I have found a new passion for web designing due to the use of Google Sites for my tech class digital portfolio.

I have enjoyed doing the Cup of Wisdom badges, maybe I will complete all the badges or at least bookmark the resources provided! Future Ready sessions offered at Brock University have been extremely informative and will continue attending the sessions.

The next thing to do is progress in the other apps for both French and Spanish. Most of my data is skewed towards DuoLingo; I need to see how the other apps are as you progress further. Next week I will be busier with life, but hopefuly I will be able to tell everyone how Memrise and Babbel are!

Until next time this is Senor Martinez saying goodbye!

I find your lack of conversational lessons disturbing- Darth Martinez. Reflection post number 2

Hola a todos,

Welcome to my second reflection post on my Genius Hour project on learning French and how to read and write Spanish. So far what I have accomplish is finding three apps on the Google Play store and doing a handful of lessons on them. The following three apps have been selected- Duolingo, Babbel and Memrise. For French the following courses have been finished:

Duolingo:
-Basic 1, level 0
-Basic 2, level 0
-Phrases, level 0
-Plurals 1, level 0
-Gallicism, level 0
-Basics 3, level 0
-Food, level 0

Babbel:
-Beginner's Course 1, Salut! Part 1
-Beginner's Course 2, C'esr une jolie photo. Part 1
-Beginner's Course 3, C'est à qui? Part 1

Memrise:
French 1
   -Launchpad!
   -I Come in Peace
   -Being Human

For Spanish the following courses have been finished:

Duolingo:
-Intro, level 0
-Phrases, level 0
Travel, level 0

Babbel
-Beginner's Course 1, Mucho gusto! Part 1.
Beginner's Course 2, Estamos casados. Part 1

Memrise:
Spanish 1
  -Launchpad
  -I Come in Peace

In a three week period I have tried to spend at least 30 minutes to one hour learning either Spanish or French per day, sometimes that is more and other days it is a struggle to do 15 minutes.

Biggest obstacle I have faced is the paywalls these apps contain. I remember when I tried Duolingo a few years back and there were no adds bothering me while finishing a course! Now every time you'll get a message that asks if you want to get premium or try premium for 7 days. Look, I understand that these apps need income, but try to do it in a less bothersome way. Babbel has each lesson after part 1 in each course behind a paywall. Memrise will not let the user go to what lesson they want to without paying for premium.
Another issue I have encountered was the lack of conversation lessons or even how there are rules to follow for certain words when used, e.g. vous, nous and tu. I understand that you need to learn the basics before proceeding to more complicated conversational speech. I would like that in the end of the lesson there were was a conversation lesson to help you with implementing what you learned in a conversation type style.

For next week I will try and see if I can label things around my apartment in Spanish and in French. Lessons wise I hope to tackle at least 3 lessons per app. A bonus task would be to try and have a basic conversation with my girlfriend in French this week.

Hasta la vista

After all this time? A Genius Hour reflection post!

Sweet Christmas where has the time gone? What have I learned so far? So many questions let's dive in!

What have I learned about Genius Hour?
Well, what I have learned is that we all have a potential to come up with some very cool super duper projects if given the time to let those projects grow! Some of the projects my peers are tackling vary from lifestyle changes to adding Dungeons and Dragons into a classroom space. Me personally I want to relearn French and learn how to write and read Spanish!

via GIPHY

Though I'll never become the Spanish genius like Senor Chang, I do wish to keep Spanish within my lineage. As for  French, I really just want to be comfortable going to places like Quebec and be able to communicate with the locals without them speaking English to me! So far my journey has been okay! I have been using apps such as Duolingo, Babbel and Memrise-all free versions. I have relearned words I learned during my elementary and high school days but other than that not much. Je suis tres excite d'apprendre more French!

Inquiry-based learning is a hot topic in the educational world. I love this idea and feel that education is based around questions and ideas we think of. As teachers, we want to create an environment where students ask the question "why" so many times your head wants to burst! You want students to question what they are learning rather than just sitting there and taking it all in. I personally feel you learn more from the discussion of ideology, debates, or from curiosity.

I would love to come up with some sort of Genius Hour block during the day in my classroom or develop a club around this idea! Have students time to reflect and think of awesome ideas for any subjects that have passion towards! I stumbled across What is Genius Hour and read how Genius Hour is being implemented in some schools! This article answered all my thought on how to implement this in a classroom. First, give the students time to think of a project around something they are passionate about. Two, challenge the students on how their passion can lead to cool and interesting projects. Three, provide the students with the time they need to complete this project - does more time mean a better project? Fourth, make sure students are on task. I love the idea of inquiry-based learning and constructive learning, however, the question that keeps coming to my head is how much leeway do we give the students? I believe that is subjective to each educator and is up to the educator to make a judgemental call.

I'll leave you with a video about Genius Hour in a classroom setting and hoping that one day I'll be able to include this with my own style.

Adios! Au Revoir!

Welcome All!

Welcome to my Genius hour blog! In our introduction class for Teaching Digital Learners in The Digital Age (8Y08) we were introduced to many tools that will help present information in many different forms and platforms!

A quick fun an quirky way to demonstrate my passion can be shown with this word art or passion cloud created with wordart.com!
As a science nerd I had to pick the elemeyer flask option provided from the website! One of the first word that pops out is Familia; which is Spanish for family. Soccer is a sport that is a huge part of me, from waking up at 7am to tune into an English Premiere League to playing it for 18 years; my favourite team is Liverpool FC. I love video games (I still love Pokémon to this date, play on my Nintendo Switch, my PS4 and on my PC). Dogs, do I really need to say more? I love learning and do not want to stop learning! This in a nutshell is me! I hope you enjoyed this fun and quirky nerd word art!

I'm going to let you into a secret. I worked at the YMCA Brantford for a solid school year as School-age Child Care (SACC) supervisor and I stayed away from Pinterest like it was the plague. Within a couple of days of Teach College I was signed up and created an All About Me Pinterest board. Huge Harry Potter and Star Wars fan, so the cross-over art was a must (Ravenclaw and the darkside of the force is where it is at). I love the Oilers, even if they are terrible with the best player in the game! Two random dudes in this board-Tyler Dewitt (TED talk around making science fun) and Sir Ken Robinson; both these educators produced TED talks that have in a way influenced my way of thinking about education. I do hope to become a principal in the future.

Failure can be a scary thing. However, it is also one of the greatest teachers out there. In this video embedded below we see Yoda, probably one of the best masters of his time, teach Luke Skywalker a thing or two about what it truly means to be a master.
